A note from Dona,
the creator and seamstress behind donakins

Having been raised in a home where my siblings and I fell asleep to the sound of our mother at her sewing machine, it seemed only natural that sewing was something I was destined to learn and subsequently fall in love with.

Through the years I have created countless sewing projects, but it is quilting that has most captured my heart and creativity.

My previous work in a fabric store enabled me to gather a strong knowledge of different types of fiber including both the benefits and drawbacks. From this knowledge, my fondness for cotton was born. Cotton is unique in that it is a natural fiber allowing maximum comfort for the user, and when its life is over, the maximum benefit for our environment. (For a further understanding of our commitment to natural cotton, please visit our Fiber Matters page)

I am now the mother of two grown children. When my girls were babies I found it interesting when they attached themselves to their special blankets. They dragged their beloved snugly through their day finding comfort and security in both happy and sad situations.

Being grateful, and recognizing how important it is for a child to have that unconditional security, I began making baby blankets. New moms loved the softness and the large size. I was soon receiving requests for these cozy blankets, so it was a natural progression for Donakins to be born.

In the beginning, Donakins started by offering only a flannel line but has now grown to include quilts and gauze wraps. Most of our blankets are one of a kind, and when sold, a completely different one will take its place. Check back often to see our new creations!.
